Divide ornamental grasses

Untitled Document

Depending on the scale and age of your grass, you'll need a sharp spade or shovel and a knife, possibly an axe or even a chainsaw or crowbar! You'll also need some shears.

  1. Dig around the plant allowing as much root ball as practical and lift it out of the ground.
  2. Divide the clump into sections using a knife, a saw or a chainsaw.
  3. Trim the foliage back by one-quarter to one-third of its original height.
  4. Replant the divisions as soon as possible, to prevent moisture loss.
